Rhodes University has confirmed that students of Ruth First residence experienced an attempted robbery in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Three intruders entered the residence through an unlocked door of the first floor common room.
“Three students disrupted the perpetrators as they were making their way through the residence,” said Media Relations Officer Catherine Deiner. “The perpetrators used pepper spray but the students are unharmed and have been offered counselling from the Counselling Centre.”
Deiner explained that a bicycle, three cellphones and a wallet were taken from the residence.
CPU and SAPS responded to the scene and evidence collection is underway.
SAPS has subsequently launched an investigation into the case.
