Give5 2017: How to get involved

This year, Give5 will run officially from 22 March to 2 April, with the ceremonial Fire Walk planned for 31 March 2017.

Give5 is a passionate tradition among students at UCKAR with 100 percent participation from every single residence, including the Oppidan’s, clubs and societies. It provides an opportunity for Rhodents to help “one of their own” and welcomes participation from alumni, staff and the larger community of Grahamstown and beyond. The 2017 Give5 Committee has once again chosen the Pocket Money Fund as the beneficiary of its FUN-raising efforts.

The Pocket Money Fund assists deserving students who do not have funds for amenities such as toiletries or stationery after paying tuition fees and rent. Many of our students miss out on traditional university experiences such as going out to the local pub, grabbing a hamburger with friends or being able to invite their fellow students into their rooms for a cup of coffee. They simply cannot afford it.

Last year, Give5 student representatives raised more than R83 000 in one week. Further fundraising from Alumni, Old Rhodians, UCKAR Staff and corporates continued throughout the year, which enabled the transfer of a total amount of almost R270 000.00 to the Pocket Money Fund to benefit selected beneficiaries this year. Among the donors are past Pocket Money Fund recipients!

This year, the Give5 Committee looks forward to another exciting campaign. Despite the fact that Give5 officially only begins on 24 March, numerous voluntary student groups have already started FUN-raising. All this passion can be followed at:
The committee has requested to be contacted by any person or society wanting to join the initiative to discuss marketing and sponsorship.
