On Friday 18 September 2015 Campus Vibes will host the annual rap cypher, Watch the Throne. This year the event will be run in association with The Oppidan Press, P.S Entertainment, RMR and RU Hip Hop Society.
Rhodes University students who consider themselves lyricists will come together to showcase why they deserve to sit on the throne as Rhodes’ best MC at Prime Nightclub from 7pm.
Each of the eight rappers will bring a unique style and battle technique to the cypher with the hopes of winning the grand prize of R1500 and a case of Red Bull. To win a contender must is impress a panel of judges and the crowd in all three rounds.
In the first round the contenders are given an opportunity to recite a rap ensemble which they have prepared themselves. It is then up to the judges to decide which of the eight are suited for the cypher rounds that follow. Ntuli says although the overall winner will be decided by the crowd, they are using judges in the first round to make sure that those who get to the final round are competent. “We didn’t want the crowd to decide on that because people bring their friends and entourages and end up getting through even if someone is better than them,” said Ntuli.
The contenders who make it to the second round will then be given a beat to freestyle over, as they please. Then the crowd uses the second round to decide which of the contestants are fit for the final round.
The finalists will be given a word which they have to use as the starting point of their rhyme. Ntuli describes the last round as the most challenging because the constraint to a topic is what really tests the limits of the finalists’ talent.
The eight contenders will be accompanied by entertainment from Von Dirty and rapper Optik Nerve.
Pre-sold tickets will be on sale for R10 and R20 will be charged at the door. For more information contact Campus Vibes through the following:
