This past weekend saw a win for the Rhodes University 1st XV rugby team as they beat Walter Sisulu University 1st XV team 17-7 during the final game of the InterVarsity tournament on Saturday, 15 August.

Jürgen Stroebel, lock and vice-captain of the RU team, opened the scoring in the 7th minute with his first try of the season. The score at halftime remained at 7-0 to RU, despite many near-succesful attempts from both teams.

The RU team came back even stronger in the second half with lock Simon Quinn scoring a try early on. Charlie Gird did not falter in converting both tries and also brought home a penalty.

WSU did not give up easily and fought back toward the end of the game with Somila Mantayi of WSU scoring a try that was successfully converted by Kwezi Zintu. Despite their efforts, WSU were unable to score any further.

The whistle was blown to the sound of the jubilant Rhodes University crowd singing the South African National Anthem with the final score at 17-7 to the RU 1st XV team.
